You are invited to our Community Contra Dance
Join us for an evening of fun and celebrating. As part of the ordination of our Pastor, David Denis, we are celebrating by inviting our neighborhood to an outdoor Contra Dance.
This public event will take place on SUNDAY EVENING JUNE 12, 2016 at the Fletcher-Murphy Park right across the street from United Baptist, at 28 Fayette Street. The dancing will start about 6:00 and end about 7:30. All are welcome. Jane Orzechowski and the Sugar River Band will be providing the music and caller. They have a great reputation for festive music and are great at helping Contra Dance newbies find their feet. If it rains, we'll hold the dance in the church sanctuary. We'll have to move some chairs, but we won't let a little rain dampen our celebration. And feel free to make all the jokes you want about Baptists and dancing...That's part of the fun. |
What's a Contra Dance?
The easiest way to describe it is this: think of a Contra Dance as a square dance, but not western. It's a definitely NH kind of social dancing, with roots that go back to barn dances and house dances of an earlier century.
You absolutely do NOT have to "know how to dance" or be a dancer. This is not about performing or showing off. It's about having fun and enjoying a great social art form. If you can walk, you can do this. Our band knows that there will be a whole lot of folks new to Contra Dancing and we'll be taking it easy. So don't worry about messing up. The fact is...you will mess up...and nobody will care. We figure that's a pretty good picture of the grace-filled life we are called by Christ to live in our churches. So dancing is just kind of practice for that. If you want to get a flavor for it, check out the videos below. |
