A canticle is a prayer found in the Bible that is from a place other than a Psalm. Zechariah's ability to speak was taken away from him after a little talk with an angel. When his son John was born, his power of speech was returned. What's the first thing you would say after being silent for 9 months? Zechariah prayed a prayer of such significance the church is still praying it after him today. Let's look at The Benedictus.

There he goes again, talking in riddles. A grain of wheat, earth, death, fruit. Riddles. I think Jesus loved the layered truth of the riddle (aka "parable"). Therefore, I think the answer may be at least threefold...God's Word, our life, and Christ's body. If that doesn't clear it up, maybe I can make it even murkier for you if you show up Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m for worship. Jesus will be here. Why don't you join him -- maybe he can clear it up. Pastor Dave preaching on scriptures Jeremiah 31:31-34 / Psalm 119:9-16 / Hebrews 5:5-10 / John 12:20-33

The waiting of Advent is over. And so we gather to remember the birth of our Lord. But it isn’t a birth that we celebrate. We remember the birth because this is how the Most High God has come down to the dirt, to dwell as a human. The ancient words say it this way: “For us and for our salvation he became human.” For our salvation – and oh baby do we need saving.
